What Happened

Around 3:00pm or so, most of you probably were getting some tweaky database errors about logtext being full (or some crap like that).. In an attempt for me to pull DJ out of the gutter, about 3.5 million entries got deleted when the table (logtext) decided to corrupt itself and die....

Now, in the past, I was doing database backups every morning (which is why DJ was down from like midnight PST to around 2-3am PST).. I got *lots* of complaints about that from people, so I decided to run backups three times a week (to lessen the load).. Well, I guess this bit me in the ass.... I had to restore from the backups made monday morning..

So, heres some questions you may have:

Q: Is everything that I posted from monday morning to the crash gone for good?

A: Yes, unfortunally.. I lost plenty of crap too that I am quite pissed about (feelings before boards, how I felt after I took my exam this morning, etc)..

Q: Will this ever happen again?

A: Computers will be computers.. Your computer doesnt stay up for 24/7 without glitches.. Especially when you have a quarter of a million people accessing it daily.. How can I prevent this in the future? Running morning backups like I was before and telling the people who bitch to just F-Off.. For the time being, I spent the extra time and configured the database for about 100 million possible entries.. that should put is well in the clear..

Q: Cant you do anything else?

A: Unfortunally no.. I can only say that I am sorry this happened, and are damn grateful that I spent the hours setting up a backup server to make backups of all of your journals.. Without those, you all would of lost everything (and DJ would become extinct)..

The next code revision is going to allow clustering, which should bring some new and revised features to DJ..

I am truly sorry that you all lost journal entries.. I feel horrible about what has happened.. I wish I could afford redundant servers, but at the present time I have to be happy with what I have.

The theme tinykao has been removed. If you were using them use another mood theme set. The person that originally mapped them out and gave LiveJournal and DeadJournal permission to use them did not own the copyright to these images. The owner of the copyright for those images contacted LiveJournal and they wanted them removed. So, I have removed them from DeadJournal as well as not to get in to any hassles with having their images up. This is why I make you all provide me with the statement that you own and created said images. This way the person that sends them in is responsible for any possible legal action for lifting copyright images. We operate on good faith and with your statement that you are the author/artist of your mood themes, you are ultimately responsible for any repercussions that might arise if you do not draw them yourself and/or have permission from the original author of those images. The author of those images has not contacted DeadJournal but LiveJournal has. I have taken it upon myself to remove them from our site as to respect the copyright holder of said images.

Please remember that nobody likes their images stolen, so do not just go out on the web and lift images. Please remember as well that if you send in a set of mood icons you are claiming them to be yours and if any legal action takes place you will be ultimately responsible. Some people take copyright very seriously and will sue you for every penny you have to your name.

This might be a good lesson to let you all know that if I find out that any of the images you have sent in for mood themes are ones that you did not draw or do not have permission to distribute, I will help the copyright owner by directing them to you that sent in the particular theme set.

If I have reasonable proof that you did not draw any images or that they are not royalty free I will NOT map them out and put them on the server. For me to do so would open us up to tons of legal hassles and would be a terrible waste of my time and resources. If your e-mail with the zip file of your theme you want put up does not contain a statement from you that you own the copyright or permissions to put them up on the server I will not map them out and put them on DeadJournal. I will also not put them up for people that do not have a validated account. So, if you are not validated you are out of luck as far as submitting any mood icons.

So, if anyone happens to know of or have proof that any themes that anyone has sent in or created belong to someone else, or that they are not royalty free please let me know so that I can remove them from the server.

Thank You,
Charity.
